Graduate visa course eligibility
Limits
Based on current UK government guidance, including its future January 2027 cutoff. It does not establish any individual’s eligibility, guarantee a decision date or assess another immigration route. Fees are omitted because individual costs and duration differ.

The Graduate visa has an application-date cutoff at the end of 2026. For London students planning the move from study to work, eligibility must come before the calendar shortcut.
The UK government’s Graduate visa guidance says applications made on or before December 31, 2026 receive a two-year visa, while those made from January 1, 2027 receive 18 months. Doctoral graduates have a separate three-year period.
The distinction is the application date, not the date of a graduation ceremony. But the earlier deadline does not create eligibility for someone whose course is unfinished or whose provider has not made the required report. For international students at London institutions, those conditions belong beside the date in any plan.
A Graduate visa needs the right starting point
The official Graduate visa overview says applicants must be in the UK and hold a Student visa or Tier 4 (General) student visa. They must have completed an eligible course for the required period, and their education provider must have told the Home Office that they successfully completed it.
The government specifically suggests asking the education provider if there is uncertainty about that notification. A result appearing in a student portal and the provider notifying the Home Office are not interchangeable assumptions. Find out which step has actually occurred before treating an intended application date as settled.
Applications must be made before the existing Student or Tier 4 visa expires. Applicants do not need to wait for a graduation ceremony or certificate once the required completion notification has been made. That gives the ceremony a different role from the immigration deadline: it is not the trigger the guidance identifies.
Check the course and the time spent studying
The government’s course eligibility page says the provider must be a licensed sponsor with a track record of compliance. A UK bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, PhD or doctorate is the usual qualifying course, although the page also identifies certain professional and teaching qualifications.
The same page requires at least 12 months of study in the UK if the course is longer than 12 months, or the full course length when it is shorter than 12 months. It explains that being in the UK when the provider required attendance is what matters, and that term-break or weekend travel in its one-year master’s example does not erase the year.
Those summary rules should not be stretched into an answer for every study pattern. The page contains specific provisions, including historic coronavirus-related exceptions. A student with an unusual course, transfer or study history should resolve that question with the provider and the official guidance rather than extrapolate from another graduate’s experience.
Work permission is not a permanent route
The visa starts on the date the application is approved. It cannot be extended, although an eligible holder may be able to switch to another route, such as a Skilled Worker visa. A longer first grant and a later route to remain are therefore separate decisions.
Holders can work in most jobs, look for work and be self-employed. They cannot work as professional sportspeople or claim most public funds or the State Pension. The government also restricts study under this route to courses that are not eligible for a Student visa; it is not unrestricted permission to begin any further degree.
For the employment paperwork itself, see TockLON’s guide to written job terms. A job offer and immigration permission answer different questions. Neither document should be treated as a substitute for the other.
Leave room for the decision
The government says a decision usually arrives within eight weeks after the online application, identity proof and documents are supplied. It says applicants can stay in the UK while awaiting the decision. The estimate is not a guaranteed appointment or approval date.
For London graduates comparing plans across countries, the practical checklist is completion, notification, eligibility, current visa expiry and application date. This article summarizes published guidance, not an individual immigration assessment. December’s cutoff matters, but it cannot turn an unfinished course into a completed one.
